The Mavericks (8-0 overall, 5-0 I-Meck) rang up more than 60 points for the second straight week and rolled to a 65-6 victory over the Titans (3-5, 2-3), handing Hopewell its second straight loss.
Mallard Creek got points from every aspect of its game. The offense was led by three rushing touchdowns by running back Jela Duncan (12 carries, 88 yards). Quarterbacks Andrew Goodman and Aaron Harbison each threw a pair of touchdown passes.
On special teams, defensive back Corey Miller blocked a Hopewell punt on the first play of the second quarter and returned it himself for a 30-yard touchdown.
Defensively, Justin James scored the Mavericks’ last touchdown on a 103-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.
It all added up to a long night for Hopewell, which mustered 216 yards in total offense — a fairly respectable total against the Mallard Creek defense this season.
The Titans got their only points of the game following the punt block and return by Miller, which gave the Mavericks a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Hopewell started the second quarter on its own 28 after the kickoff, and running back Denzel Heath got loose in the Mallard Creek secondary for a 72-yard touchdown run. A fumbled snap on the extra point resulted in an unsuccessful try at the two-point conversion.
But rather than giving the Titans a spark, the score just seemed to energize the Mavericks, who ran up 24 unanswered points during the rest of the quarter for a 45-6 halftime lead.
Hopewell coach David Johnson told the Citizen Monday what he said to Mavericks coach Mike Palmieri at midfield after the game.
“If you win states, at least we scored on you,” he said.
Hopewell continues I-Meck play at Vance this Friday.
