The Wildcats, who begin Pioneer Football League play at San Diego this week, are 2-1.
A goal-line stand by the Wildcat defense in the fourth quarter set up the 99-yard play. Carkhuff rolled right on first down and found Funsten near the Wildcat 40-yard line. He had a few steps on his defender, caught the pass and raced for the end zone and a 35-7 lead with 13:05 to play.
“Lanny did a great job and got a great release,” said Carkhuff, who missed the school’s single-game passing record by four yards.
Funsten finished the day with a career-best 195 yards on seven catches. Tim Hines had four catches for 95 yards and two scores, including a 66-yarder, and Nick Orobello caught his first career touchdown pass.
Davidson’s offense also was boosted by a 120-yard rushing performance by Clem Butler.
“Clem had a very good night, and that’s good to see,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “You have to be able to run the ball in this offense, and if we continue to improve there, we’ll be more effective offensively.”
Grier, Patriots keep rolling
Want to know how Davidson Day’s football season is going?
Look at one play from last week’s 42-30 win at Asheville School.
Leading 35-30, Davidson Day faced a fourth-and-3 from inside its own 30-yard line. And Patriots coach Chad Grier instructed his team to go for it.
“If I had had time to think about it, I may have punted,” he said. “It never crossed my mind to punt.”
The call for an inside quarterback trap paid off, too. Patriots quarterback Will Grier ran for 60
yards, and followed that by throwing to Aaron Seward on a 12-yard touchdown pass to seal
Davidson Day’s sixth win in as many outings.
Coach Grier said attempting a fourth-and-3 from deep in your own territory is probably not
recommended, but it’s a reflection of the team’s mindset.
“It says a lot about the kids,” said Grier. “They’re very poised and confident.”
Will Grier finished 26-of-37 for 353 yards with five touchdown passes and two interceptions. He also ran for 137 yards on 10 carries.
His top receiver was Evan Gates, who had eight catches for 139 yards and a score. Seward had six catches for 77 yards and one score. Grier hit Jordan Brown for a touchdown pass and Jordan Young for two. Brown also had a 15-yard touchdown run.
Tre Hunt led the Davidson Day defense with 12 tackles.
Davidson Day is idle this week and plays at Hargrave Military Academy Oct. 7.
Allison-led Eagles have confidence
If you told Rich Landis on a Tuesday that Demetri Allison had just scored again, he might just
believe you.
That’s the kind of Friday night production SouthLake Christian’s star junior is becoming known
for.
Allison scored four first-half touchdowns and led SouthLake in a dominant 54-20 win over High
Point Christian last week. And he scored on two receptions from Randy Schroeder, on an 88-yard punt return and on a 10-yard interception return.
“He’s a gamer,” said Landis. “He’s just one of those guys that’s around the football when
something big is happening. That’s how he is.”
Landis said Allison’s performances are rubbing off. The Eagles are 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the
Central Piedmont Football Conference entering Friday’s game at Asheville School, and the players believe they can win every time they step on the field.
“They have a confidence about them that I think it’s safe to say SouthLake hasn’t had before (as a team),” said Landis. “As a group, they believe they can accomplish a lot.”
Also last week, Eagle Jake Hatfield returned an interception 53 yards for a score, Sam Hatfield and Connor Rutkai caught touchdown passes and Alex Rose returned a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown.
