San Diego shut out Davidson 42-0 Oct. 1, and last week, Marist edged Davidson 13-9, with the only Wildcat points coming via a Chazzo Habliston 27-yard field goal and a 94-yard punt return by Toms Bernhards-Calla.
“We’re just struggling right now on offense,” said Davidson quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff. “Give credit to the opposing teams, and some of the blame is on us.”
Marist (2-4 overall, 1-2 Pioneer Football League) held Davidson to 226 total yards, almost 150 below the team average. And Davidson managed just 11 rushing yards on 16 attempts.
The Wildcats (2-3, 0-2) were missing three starters at receiver against Marist, and coach Tripp Merritt said that was a factor in the offense’s inefficiency.
“Your timing is off a little bit,” he said.
The Davidson defense gave the team a chance, most notably in a third-quarter goal line stand and by holding the Red Foxes to a field goal in the fourth quarter after a muffed punt gave Marist the ball at the Davidson 18.
Bernhards-Calla’s return, with the score tied 3-3 in the second quarter, tied a school record and was Davidson’s first punt return for a score since 2000.
