Skeen, VCU add ESPY to the shelf

Written by

Jamie Skeen became a regular on ESPN highlights in March, as he and the Virginia Commonwealth University basketball team made a historic run to the Final Four.

His face still pops up in occasional video packages, and last Wednesday night, the former North Meck High star was on the premier cable sports network once again, as VCU was awarded an ESPY for “Best Upset.” The Rams were specifically recognized for their 71-61 defeat of Kansas March 27 in San Antonio’s Alamodome, the win that sent them to the program’s first Final Four.

Skeen had one of the top games of his career that day, scoring a game-high 26 points to go with 10 boards.

Skeen was joined at the awards show in Los Angeles by teammates Joey Rodriguez, Ed Nixon, Brandon Rozzell and Bradford Burgess and VCU coach Shaka Smart.

The Rams’ win got the ESPY nod over the Seattle Seahawks’ upset of New Orleans in the NFL playoffs, Blame defeating Zenyatta in the Breeder’s Cup and Fabricio Werdum’s win over Fedor Emelianenko in an MMA match.
