“We have a very active group of young adults who care about each other and their community,” says Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce President Bill Russell, the club’s advisor. “I really enjoy working with these young people. They do not allow a disability to keep them from achieving their goal. Hearing their laughter and feeling their compassion reminds me of what’s really important in life. I am very grateful for the time I have with them each month at our meetings and events.”
Meetings are held the fourth Friday of the month at the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce office. Refreshments are typically provided by the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club with activities arranged by the Arc of Mecklenburg County.
Last week, the club participated in a talent contest and selected several members to represent them either dancing or singing at a district competition with other Charlotte regional clubs. The district talent show will be held Friday, July, 15, in Mint Hill.
Russell, a past president of the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club, says there is a need in the community for this type of organization. “The Lake Norman communities of north Mecklenburg and south Iredell have seen a tremendous surge in residential growth, and while we have outstanding parks and recreation programs and other resources available for our residents, an element of our society (that is) underserved is the residents with physical and mental disabilities.”
