Smith leaving Hopewell

Written by

Hopewell boys tennis coach Craig Smith has resigned to take an assistant principal job at Ashbrook High in Gastonia.

Smith coached the Titans to three league titles, including back-to-back championships in the I-Meck Conference the last two years. Smith was conference coach of the year this year, and his 2006 Titanswon the ME-CA 6 title.

Smith’s final Titan team may have been his best. Relying on multiple starters who Smith recruited from Hopewell’s halls simply for their athleticism and character, Hopewell went 18-4 and reached the third round of the 4A playoffs for the first time. The team also compiled a 4.825 weighted GPA.

Smith previously taught multiple levels of math and most recently served as Hopewell’s dean of students.
