“So far, I don’t know if I could script a better start,” he said this week.
The Eagles are 3-0 for the first time in program history after defeating Wake Christian 39-21 on the road last Friday, and perhaps the only dampener for SouthLake is that it is idle this week.
“We’ve got the momentum,” said Landis. “This is the one week we’d love to be playing.”
SouthLake has been able to run and pass the ball this year and compiled 446 yards of offense against Wake. Having such a balanced attack is making defenses guess.
“That’s right where we want them,” said Landis.
The Eagles continued sharing the load offensively. Running back Adam Gilkerson ran for 86 yards on 17 carries and scored on runs of 3 and 18 yards. Quarterback Randy Schroeder was 14-of-26 passing for 267 yards and threw a 15-yard score to Sam Hatfield. Schroeder also capped a secondquarter drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Demtri Allison caught five passes for 87 yards and had a 12-yard touchdown run.
And SouthLake managed one defensive score when Andre Diouf intercepted a pass and returned it for an 8-yard score.
The SouthLake defense intercepted three more passes, including two by Hatfield and one by Allison, and Hough High transfer Brian Jones had his best game with the Eagles, leading the team with seven tackles. Taylor Jurney now leads the Eagles with seven sacks this season.
SouthLake returns to action Sept. 16 at home against Hickory Grove Baptist.
Davidson Day 40, Camden Military 7
The road warriors are coming home.
Well, sort of.
Having already traveled to the N.C. coast, Fayetteville and into South Carolina, Davidson Day will play its only “home” game of the year Friday when it hosts Village Christian at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the team that Patriot fans will see is 3-0 in its first varsity campaign.
Davidson Day rolled past Camden Military 40-7 last Friday, just four days after beating Trinity Christian in a game delayed by Hurricane Irene. To get two wins in such a short amount of time was no small matter, said Patriots coach Chad Grier.
“In the same week, it was a bear,” he said of the challenge.
The Patriots excelled at Camden behind another stellar performance by quarterback Will Grier. The sophomore was 25-of-34 passing for 350 yards and six touchdowns, giving him 17 in three games.
Grier hit Jordan Brown for scores of 77 and 14 yards, Jordan Young for touchdowns of 3, 1 and 27 yards and had a 9-yard touchdown throw to Aaron Seward. Chad Grier said his son is finding a rhythm in the pocket, the offensive line’s protection has been key to the passing game, and there is a talented receiving corps running routes.
“It’s not just one guy to key on,” said Chad Grier.
Brown finished last Friday’s game with six catches for 127 yards, while Young had seven catches for 94 yards. Tre Hunt led the Patriots defense with nine tackles.
Davidson Day basketball player Jason Eddie is set to join the team after fulfilling the state’s requirement for practice days.
Georgetown 40, Davidson 16
Sophomore quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff passed for a career-high 364 yards and two touchdowns, but Davidson College lost its season opener 40-16 to Georgetown last Saturday.
Davidson’s new Air Raid offense resulted in general movement up and down the field, but the Wildcats committed four turnovers and rushed for minus-7 yards.
“It’s all things that can be cleaned up, and give credit to Georgetown,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “They pushed us around up front at times. But this is the first game we’ve played in this offense, and we’re only going to get better.”
Lanny Funsten caught eight passes for 102 yards to lead Wildcat receivers. Reese Williams had eight catches for 46 yards and an 8-yard touchdown reception. Carkhuff’s other scoring pass went for 44 yards to Tim Hines.
Davidson’s home opener is Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff at Richardson Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
