Hough volleyball keeping pace with Wildcats

Written by

Sandi Skidmore saw a lot from her Hough High volleyball team in a three-day span this past week.

Against I-Meck Conference rival Lake Norman last Thursday, the Huskies struggled in a 3-0 loss. “It was awful,” said Skidmore. “We couldn’t do anything right.”

But in their return to the court last Saturday in a tri-match at Providence, the Huskies could do little wrong in back-to-back wins over Northwest Guilford (3-1) and Providence (3-2).

“It was a different team on Saturday,” said Skidmore. “That’s probably the best passing we’ve had.”

The weekend wins carry some weight. Asked if the win over Providence was her team’s best so far, Skidmore said, “so far.”

She has bigger plans for the team that won 17 games and reached the third round of last year’s state playoffs.

Skidmore said she’s been pleased by the recent play of front line player Nicole Destefano.

“Nicole’s really coming into her own, playing smart and playing well,” said Skidmore.

The Huskies returned to I-Meck Conference play Tuesday at home and beat Mallard Creek in three games, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-8 to improve to 12-2 overall and 6-1 at the midway point of the I-Meck slate, its league wins all coming by a 3-0 margin. That’s good enough for second place in the eightteam I-Meck, behind only Lake Norman, which travels to Hough for a conference rematch showdown Oct. 11.
