Fernando Luis Myers is headed to regionals after winning the MECKA singles championship.

The Hopewell junior and tournament top seed defeated North Meck’s Andre Tautjo 6-0, 7-5 in the championship last week. He rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the second set to wrap up the title.

“I’ve always had tough ones playing him,” said Myers.

Myers is 12-0 this season and had a streak of 48 games without a loss.

By reaching the MECKA semifinals, Tautjo also earned regional qualification.

Wydra plays through in doubles win
It’s his senior year.

That’s why Hough High’s Sean Wydra decided to play through an injury at the MECKA 4A Conference tennis tournament last week at Mallard Creek.

Wydra fell early in the doubles final and broke his fall with his right arm. A left-hander, he sprained his right wrist, which, among other things, made it difficult to serve the rest of the match. He was clearly in pain the rest of the way, but Wydra was determined to finish.

“You’ve got to stay out there, win or lose, not retire,” said Wydra. “My legs were still working.”

Wydra and sophomore Will Crane defeated teammates Patrick Loekman and Preston Snyder 6-1, 6-2 to win the conference title. Crane was impressed with how his teammate responded to taking a tumble.

“It says a lot about his character,” he said.

By reaching the semifinals, both tandems will play in the 4A West Regionals this weekend at Ardrey Kell.

Huskies win MECKA team championship
Hough went 6-0 against MECKA foes and won the conference team title for the third year.

The Huskies (11-2) also qualified for the 4A dual team state tournament, which began Tuesday.

Hough was to play 13-0 Greensboro Page in the first round.
