Wildcats take unbeaten SoCon record on the road

Davidson continued its romp through the Southern Conference basketball field this past week with wins over College of Charleston and The Citadel, completing the first half of the SoCon schedule with an 8-0 mark, the best league start for a Davidson team since the 2008-09 team started 13-0 and finished 18-2.

Through Tuesday's contests, the Wildcats were two-and-a-half games ahead of second-place Georgia Southern in the SoCon South.

"I'm very, very pleased that our guys come to the gym every day to try to get better," said Davidson coach Bob McKillop. "There's no greater joy for a coach than to walk onto the practice court and see the guys energetic, inspired and ready to work. We don't have to coach effort at all. That, to me, is the biggest thrill."

On a seven-game win streak, Davidson (14-4 overall) left mid-week for Thursday's game at Chattanooga, and the Wildcats will play at Samford Saturday. Davidson will play its third straight road game Feb. 1 at Furman, before returning to Belk Arena to host Chattanooga Feb. 4 and Wofford Feb. 6.

Davidson junior forward Jake Cohen matched his career-high in scoring with 29 points and pulled down a career-best 14 boards in the 87-69 win over Charleston last Thursday. Nik Cochran and De'Mon Brooks added 16 and 15, respectively, as the Wildcats controlled the game.

"Davidson, of course, is very good," said Charleston coach Bobby Cremins. "Good for Bobby. He's got them back, playing great basketball. I'm not shocked, but they're an outstanding team."

Saturday against The Citadel, Cohen again led the Wildcats, this time scoring 20 in the 80-51 victory. Brooks added 15 and JP Kuhlman 11 for the Wildcats, who led 47-16 at the half.

Cohen is averaging 25 points per game in his past six games.

Forward Clint Mann, out with a head injury the past two games, was expected to play Thursday at Chattanooga.

Clyburn headed to UNC-Pembroke

North Meck High football standout Terrence Clyburn has committed to play at UNC-Pembroke. Clyburn also considered the programs at Campbell and Charlotte.

Clyburn had 42 receptions for 517 yards and five scores, but did much of his damage as a kick returner. He returned three kicks and two punts for scores. He also picked off three passes and rushed for 280 yards.

Huskies selected for all-star soccer events

Hough High senior soccer players Jaron Bradley and Nathaniel Goodwin have been selected to play in the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star Game July 7 in Charleston. The game is a matchup between seniors from North and South Carolina. Goodwin led Hough with 23 goals and 14 assists this fall and has committed to UNC-Wilmington. Bradley, a keeper, has committed to UNC-Asheville. He notched four shutouts this year.

Goodwin was also selected to the N.C. Coaches Association's East-West Soccer Game, set for July 17 in Greensboro. He is the first Hough athlete picked for the annual events.

Patriot boys now 22-3

The Davidson Day boys' basketball team improved to 22-3 overall Tuesday with a 92-54 win over Gaston Day. Rashun Davis scored 21 points and had five assists and two steals. Phillip Anglade chipped in with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Richard Brown had 14 points and nine boards. The Patriots play at North Hills Christian Friday.

Eagles hosting SouthLake Invite

SouthLake Christian's swim teams are having a solid season through seven meets entering the SouthLake Invite Friday at 6 p.m. at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics.

Given that the Eagles only have five swimmers who are not freshmen or sophomores, SouthLake coach Gary Anderson admits he's a little surprised the Lady Eagles are unbeaten and the Eagle boys have won three times.

"It's just kids rising to the occasion and filling those spots," he said this week.

Moriah Anderson and Taylor Harkey have been the top Lady Eagle swimmers, while John Baker and Austin Meletiou have led SouthLake's boys.

Eighteen Eagles have already posted state-qualifying times.
