Two Huskies get 100th wins

Hough High wrestlers Adam Nivens and Tanner Russ each picked up their 100th career wins during the Husky Duals at Hough last Saturday.

Nivens went 4-1 in the 126-pound class to improve to 30-9 this season, while Russ won all five of his matches at 132 to move to 35-8. Both are juniors.

Hough went 3-2 as a team and finished seventh among 16 teams. The Huskies are now 12-2 in dual competition.

Piedmont (25-0) won all five of its matches to win the event.

Eagles notch big win

SouthLake Christian's wrestling team picked up a notable win last week, topping private school state power Charlotte Latin 39-30.

SouthLake earned victories in eight weight classes including by Chris Green (106 pounds), Kyle Summer (120), Patrick Robertson (126), Hamilton Hewitt (138), Sam Bryant (152), Gant Allen (170), Brian Jones (182) and Scott Richardson (220).

SouthLake improved to 17-9 with the victory.

Stinson will assist Titans' Burwell

Andrea Stinson, the former professional women's basketball player, will serve as an assistant coach for Hopewell High softball and head coach Cheryl Burwell this spring.

Stinson, now a security officer at Hopewell, played in the WNBA after starring at N.C. State University. A 1987 North Meck High graduate, Stinson led the Lady Vikings to the 1986 basketball state championship.

Legg elected to USC-Aiken HOF

Former Hopewell High basketball standout Meredith Legg (class of 2005) will be inducted into the University of South Carolina-Aiken's Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 17.

Known as a sharpshooter and passionate player, Legg graduated from Hopewell as the Titans' career scoring leader (1,250 points) and went on to become USCA's top career scorer (1,480 points) as well. During her freshman season at USCA, Legg drew national attention by converting her first 45 free throws. She finished her first collegiate season 49-of-50 at the line.

Legg has found a second home in Aiken, where she has given motivational speeches after surviving a bout with a rare form of cancer.

Copperheads tryouts are coming up

Copperheads Baseball will hold a tryout for its summer showcase teams Jan. 29 at the Denver Batting Center. The tryout will begin at 3 p.m.
