Cohen, 'Cats off to 2-0 Southern Conference start

Jake Cohen led Davidson to back-to-back Southern Conference wins on his way to recognition as SoCon Player of the Week for Nov. 29-Dec. 5.

The honor is the second consecutive for a Davidson junior. JP Kuhlman was SoCon Player of the Week for Nov. 22-28.

The 6-foot-10 Cohen averaged 21 points and six rebounds for the week, which included a 72-69 win at Wofford last Thursday and a 86-65 home win over Furman Saturday. Cohen converted 12-of-16 shots from the floor and 16-of-18 free throws in the two conference wins.

The 2-0 SoCon start comes a year after Davidson won just one of its first four and two of its first nine league games. The Wildcats were picked to win the SoCon South this year.

The SoCon schedule will resume Jan. 5 at UNC-Greensboro. The Wildcats visit rival Charlotte to renew the battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy on Saturday.

Former Hopewell High star De'Mon Brooks, a sophomore, leads Davidson in scoring and rebounding with averages of 16.7 and 7.0, respectively.

SLCA's Schoenrock commits to Queens

SouthLake Christian senior Katie Schoenrock has committed to play volleyball at Queens University in Charlotte.

An outside hitter, Schoenrock led SouthLake with 400 kills this year as the Eagles went 27-1 and reached the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association's 3A final a year after winning the NCISAA 2A crown.

LNC hopes to build off season-opening win

If coaching high school basketball is anything like it was for new coach Aaron Reeves in his Lake Norman Charter team's season opener Nov. 30, that will be fine with him.

The 1A LNC boys knocked off 4A Hough 44-43 after Hayden Goins buried a jumper in the closing seconds. Hough tried to counter, but Luke Maye's halfcourt shot missed the mark at the buzzer, setting off a LNC celebration.

LNC trailed 22-14 at the half, but led by Goins' 21 points, the Knights rallied.

"It shows that the team has heart and a lot of fight," said Reeves. "If we give that kind of effort night in and night out, good things will happen."

LNC enters Friday's game at non-conference foe Charlotte Latin with a 2-1 record, after a 64-34 win over Covenant Classical last Friday and a 61-54 loss to Cox Mill Tuesday.

The LNC girls are also 2-1, having beaten Covenant Classical 56-26 and Cox Mill 51-25 after losing 38-22 in the season opener with Hough.

Knights honored by Southern Piedmont

The Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference has released its all-conference selections for its fall sports, and a host of Lake Norman Charter athletes are included.

In football, the Knights were represented by center Conner Peterson, receiver Alex Scearce, defensive back/kick returner Lee Bobo and linebacker Sean Kane. Quarterback Michael Dorsainvil was an honorable mention.

LNC's Evan Lucas, Zach Quest, Tommy Mikuleza, Jason Owen and Taylor Easley were chosen in boys' soccer, and Sravya Uppalapati, Mallory Warren and Leanne Smithers were selected in girls' tennis. LNC's cross country representatives included Michael Westbay, Jordan Wallace, Chris Hack, Matt Panza, Sarah Hardin and Stephanie Zaino.

In golf, Maegan Ports was player of the year and joined on the all-league team by Kaelyn Pack and Brittany Buckstad. Julie Newell, Katie Fabian and Katie Sevin were LNC's selections in volleyball.

In addition, golf coach Greg Murphy and volleyball coach Jeff Moran were honored as coaches of the year.

Harvard men's hoops ranked for first time

Brandyn Curry and the Harvard Crimson basketball team are ranked in the top 25 for the first time in program history. Curry, the former Hopewell High standout, is averaging 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and a team-leading 4.1 assists for Harvard, which is 8-0. Curry is a junior.

The Crimson is ranked No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today poll and No. 25 in the Associated Press Top 25. Harvard is the first Ivy League team ranked in the AP poll since the 1997-98 Princeton team.

Harvard was to play at No. 9 Connecticut Thursday night on ESPN2.

Volleyball star Huber named all-conference

Former North Meck High volleyball standout and conference player of the year Lauren Huber, now a senior at Florida Southern University, was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference first team for the second straight year.
