Edna Mae Davis Nowlin

Mrs. Nowlin, 86, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Saturday Feb. 25. She was born Sept. 23, 1925, in Appalachia, Va., to the late Jim and Ocie Davis.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Saylor of Johnson City, Phillip Nowlin and his wife, Connie, of Huntersville; sisters, Betty Howell and husband, Ben, of Bryson City, Jeanette Cantrell and husband, Ralph, of Pound, Va., and Kathleen Jackson Penland of Pound, Va.; brother, J.B. Davis Jr. and wife, Vileda, of Falls Church, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Buddy; and sister, Ruth Davidson.

A private family service was to be held at a later date. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Huntersville is serving the family.

Mark V. DeSarro

Mr. DeSarro 53, of Charlotte died Saturday, Feb. 25, at his home. He was born Nov. 26, 1958, in East Liverpool, Ohio, to the late Joseph and Nancy DeSarro. He was a teacher at Bailey Middle School in Huntersville.

He is a former professional baseball umpire, working at nearly nearly every level including youth leagues, NCAA Division I and Division II, and the Class A professional leagues. He moved to Charlotte in 2008 and worked not only as a science teacher at Bailey Middle, but was also a football coach at the school. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville.

He is survived by his daughter, Aubrey DeSarro-Garman and her husband Jeremy, of Antioch, Tenn.; and sisters, Mary Jo Schmidbauer of East Liverpool, Loretta Shafer, of East Liverpool, and Michele Porter, and her husband, Mark, of Woodbridge, Va.; and one grandchild.

A mass of Christian burial was held at Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysis Church in East Liverpool. Burial was at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Wellsville, Ohio. Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in care of the East Liverpool Athletic Booster Club, 100 Maine B., East Liverpool, Ohio 43920; or the Columbiana County Umpire Association, in care of Bob Woomer, 148 South Surry Road, East Liverpool, Ohio 43920; or the Mark DeSarro Memorial Fund at Bailey Middle School, 11900 Bailey Road, Cornelius, NC 28031. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Huntersville served the family with local arrangements.

Peggy Ann Raymer

Mrs. Raymer, 79, of Charlotte, formerly of Davidson, died Monday, Feb. 27, at The Preston House. She was born July 9, 1932, in Iredell County to the late John and Clete Raymer. She graduated from Davidson High School and Centre College, where she was president of the women's junior class and women's student body.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her siblings, John Raymer, Jack Raymer, Ruth Raymer Gile, Rachel Raymer Wilkerson, Mourine Raymer and Henrietta Raymer. The family would like to offer special thanks to the Preston House and her caregiver, Janie Williams.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Feb. 29, at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville with the Rev. Rick Felts officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centre College, 600 West Walnut Street, Danville, KY 40422. Samuel S. James funeral service of Huntersville is serving the family.
