MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Huntersville's Cyndy Drew Etler was homeless at 13 and summa cum laude at 30. Today she is an author of young adult books and alternative school teacher, serving the "troubled teens" who resemble her former self.

At its meeting Tuesday night, The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners approved a comprehensive $19 million plan to enhance security in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Lauren Rust of Huntersville is a 2013 graduate from The University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.

Hopewell High will be among the first Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools institutions to bid farewell to the Class of 2013, and North Mecklenburg will be the last.

CORNELIUS, N.C. -- The owners of Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram have acquired a second dealership through the purchase of the former McKenney Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Gastonia. This is the first business expansion for Jack Salzman and Robin Smith, who have owned their Cornelius dealership on Torrence Chapel Road for nearly 10 years.

Wilson Reid Whitlow

Mr. Whitlow, 89, of Huntersville died Saturday, May 11, at The Gardens at Taylor Glen. He was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Mecklenburg County to the late John and Pinkie Ferrell Whitlow. He graduated from Huntersville High School in 1942 and served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 bomber radio operator during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 321 and Independence Hill Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer and Sunday school teacher for many years. He owned and operated Whitlow's Body Shop in Huntersville.

He is survived by his daughters, Judy Murphy of Charlotte and Margaret Howard of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, John Whitlow of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Whitlow; and brothers, Charles and Clarence Whitlow.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 14, at Independence Hill with the Rev. Todd Marlin officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Independence Hill Baptist Church, Building Fund or Hearts For Heros Fund, 10220 Eastfield Road, Huntersville, NC 28078. Margaret Lewandowski

Mrs. Lewandowski, 74, of Charlotte died Sunday, May 12.

She is survived by children, Michael Bradley and wife, Jacqueline, of Huntersville, Tim Bradley and wife, Anna, of Morganton, Jen Tarbet of Charlotte, Mark Lewandowski of Greensboro and Bill Bradley of Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; sister, Ann Marie Blake-Ward of Croton on the Hudson, N.Y. ; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 14, at the Huntersville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Southard officiating. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Huntersville is serving the family.

Frances Warfield Richards

Mrs. Richards, 95, of Charlotte died Sunday, May 12, at Summit Place in Mooresville. She was born Nov. 11, 1917, in Carolina, W.Va., to Joshua and Clarice Warfield. In the last 15 years of her career she was executive assistant to the treasurer of the United States Postal Service in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by daughters, Diana Kuninger and husband, Richard, of Smithville, Tex.; Mary Cobb and husband, Bill, of Davidson and Jane Miller and Husband, Tom, of Louisville, Ky.; stepson, Bob Richards and wife, Sandy, of Bridgeville, Del.; brother, Edwin Warfield of Lewisburg, W.Va.; sister, Lucille Vincent, of Columbus, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands Stanley Abruzzino and Theodore Richards; and son, Frank Abruzzno.

A funeral service was held Monday, May 20, at St. Alban's Church in Davidson. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Huntersville is serving the family.

Charles L. Chapman

Mr. Chapman, 79, of Huntersville died Sunday, May 12, at his home. He was born Oct. 25, 1933, to the late David and Kate Chapman. He served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his sons, Lamar Chapman and wife, Traci, of Huntersville, and Nelson Chapman and wife, Deborah, of Cornelius; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service was held Thursday, May 16, at Northdale Baptist Church with the Rev. J. McCray Holmes officiating. Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park. Jack Thurston Wilson

Mr. Wilson, 84, of Huntersville died Sunday, May 12. He was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Mecklenburg County to the late Robert and Roxie Wilson.

He is survived by several nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 18, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Huntersville. Memorials may be made to the Alpha One Foundation. James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.

Clark Donnell Goodrum

Mr. Goodrum, 77 of Albemarle, formerly of Cornelius, died Tuesday, May 14, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis. He was born Nov. 2, 1935, in northern Mecklenburg County to the late Horace and Sarah Caldwell Goodrum. Growing up, his entire extended family lived and farmed on land that was covered by Lake Norman. He served in the North Carolina Air National Guard. He was a long-time member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius and American Legion Post 321.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene, of Albemarle; brother, Thomas Goodrum of Cumming, Ga.; children, Lisa Bambach and husband, John, Alison Hendren and husband, Johnnie, and Wesley Goodrum and wife, Amy; step-children, Dean Barbee and wife, Karen, Paula Crisco and husband, Scott, and Todd Barbee and wife, Susanna; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Goodrum; and sister, Barbara Ann. The family would like to thank Dr. Ron Beamon and the staff at the Davidson Clinic for their long-time care.

A funeral service was held Saturday, May 18, at Bethel Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Cain officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Doris F. Mason

Mrs. Mason, 92, of Huntersville died Tuesday, May 14, at Olde Knox Commons in Huntersville. She was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Washington, D.C., to the late Leland and Alice Hendricks.
