Special needs Parents' Night Out
A free Special Needs AngelCare Parents' Night Out, sponsored by Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department and Cornelius PARC, will be held in mid January. Parents may drop off their special needs child between the ages of 1-16 for three hours of free quality child care Saturday, Jan. 14, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.. • Exhibit Opening: Wednesday, Jan. 18. The opening of an art exhibition showcasing the college's "Recent Gifts and Acquisitions," including a major piece by Polish sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz. The opening will also showcase "Works on Paper" by Sean Scully, and mark the release of "Davidson Collects: 100 Writers Respond to Art." This 280-page full color book describes the history of Davidson's visual art program, and includes 100 essays by Davidson students about works in the permanent collection. Mooresville Artist Guild
January at The Depot Gallery features another installment of the "Women Paint Women" series. The theme of this show is "More Than Just a Pretty Face." • Family Fun Fitness: Better Bodies 4 Us offers a four-week Family Fun Fitness program for parents and their children to exercise together. The program's goals are to increase awareness of the importance of exercise and eating right, increase strength; cardiovascular endurance and flexibility through circuit training, relays, and stretching; and to bring families together in a non-threatening environment to encourage communication and fun. Each family is encouraged to implement the exercises that they learn during this four-week program at home. • Digital Photography for Novices to Experts: Thursdays, Jan. 5-Feb. 9, 7-8:30 p.m. For ages 12 and older, a hands-on digital photography class. Learn from a professional how to shoot better pictures; to save them; to edit them; and to share them. Learn how to transfer files to a computer. Basic editing photo software will be reviewed, including Picasa and Photoshop. Course goal is to help individuals be comfortable with their cameras and feel confident taking photos. Students should bring digital camera, camera user guide, freshly charged batteries, fresh memory cards, etc. Students can also bring some of their favorite photos to share with the class. • Jersey Boys at The Belk Theater: Thursday, March 8, 6 p.m. See the Tony award-winning smash hit Jersey Boys. • Fencing: Fridays, Jan. 20-Feb. 24, 4-5 p.m. at Community School of Davidson, 565 Griffith St. Join the Charlotte Fencing Academy to learn about the sport of fencing. Program is designed for beginner-level students and will teach the fundamentals of the fencing weapon known as the foil. Students will learn basic footwork, blade work and tactics. Proper athletic gear (jogging/sweat suits and good shoes) should be worn. Cost is $105 for Davidson residents, $120 for all others.
• Davidson Youth Baseball Association: Registration will be held in January and February for the program, which is affiliated with PONY Baseball Inc. DYBA has provided youth baseball in the Davidson community for more than 50 years. Games are played at historic McEver Fields. • Couch-to-5K Running Plan: For participants ages 14 and older, the six-week program will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan 16-Feb. 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the track at Bailey Middle School, 11900 Bailey Road in Cornelius.
Each participant will be put through a running workout designed to progress and prepare the participant toward being able to run a 5K. Learn the proper warm-up techniques using a dynamic warm-up. Boot Camp with instructor Jeff Heal is an outdoor fitness program that offers fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training. The program is designed for those who want to lose weight, tone up, or get fit.
