Back to school picnic raises Habitat funds

Written by

More than 600 students and family members took part in a “back to school” gathering at Bailey Middle School recently and played a vital role in helping raise more than $1,400 for the community’s Habitat for Humanity program.

With some committed assistance from faculty members, including a few teachers who voluntarily plopped down on the wet seat inside the fundraising dunking booth provided by Park Avenue Properties, the Parent-Teacher-Student Association at Bailey generated $356 for the cause, which was boosted by matching-funds contributions from Ballas Chiropractic, Roof Depot and White and Haines Advanced Denistry. The total donation to the Habitat kitty was $1,427.

The project was part of Bailey’s ongoing cooperative effort with Alexander IB and Bradley Middle schools to raise enough money to build a Habitat for Humanity house in 2012.

Katy Bailey, organizer of Bailey’s back to school picnic, said students and family members began the evening enjoying a performance by the Bailey Jazz Band and sprucing up the school grounds.

Fueled by food from Brian’s Doghouse Grill, the picnic’s participants then had the opportunity to play games, scale the climbing wall, dance and socialize.
