End of an era

Written by

May Davidson, who was among the sixth generation of direct descendants of Revolutionary War hero John Davidson, was born and raised at Huntersville’s Rural Hill, a 5,000-acre spread owned by the Davidson family from 1760 until 1992. Rural Hill, off Neck Road in southwest Huntersville, is now part of the Mecklenburg County park system.

Davidson was laid to rest Monday at the Davidson Burying Grounds, across Neck Road from the Rural Hill plantation house.

Neither Davidson nor her siblings married or had children, meaning her death ends the Davidson family tree, whose branches included Gen. William Lee Davidson, for whom Davidson College and, ultimately, the Town of Davidson were named.

May Davidson also worked for the N.C. State University Department of Agriculture in Raleigh; and in Washington, D.C., for U.S. Rep. Joseph W. Ervin of North Carolina, and U.S. Rep. William Colmer of Pascagoula, Miss., before working for Sam Ervin at the height of the Watergate years.
