Ladies of legacy leave Davidson in mourning

Written by  John Deem

One proudly bore the name of her home town and embraced her ancestral ties to a Revolutionary War hero. And as if her union with the founding of our union weren’t enough,May Davidson had a desk-side seat to one of the most sensational spectacles in the history of U.S. presidents: the Senate Watergate hearings, chaired by her boss, the late U.S. Sen. Sam Ervin, for whom she served as a secretary.

Davidson, 92, died Wednesday, June 22, at The Pines in Davidson.

Patricia Knox’s legacy took root in years more recent and work closer to home. She married Russell Knox in 1956 and moved to Davidson where, from 1958 to 1972, she worked for Davidson College. In 1973, she opened Knox Realty in Davidson and was joined by Russell in 1976. Charlotte-based Allen Tate Realtors acquired Knox Realty this year. In 1981, Knox opened Davidson Dry Goods, a ladies clothing store on Main Street, which she owned and operated until 1990.

Russell Knox served as Davidson’s mayor for 14 years in the 1980s and 1990s.
