The greater Charlotte area’s second Catholic high school will open in temporary quarters in Mooresville this fall.

Dan Dolan, project developer for the new Christ the King Catholic High School, said Aug. 11 will be opening day for the school on Oak Ridge Farm Road in Mooresville. The school plans to occupy the temporary location for one year while a permanent home on property at Poplar Tent Road and N.C. 73 east of Huntersville is under construction.

Initially, Christ the King will welcome freshmen and sophomores. Dolan said the school’s first commencement will be for the class of 2014. So far, 50 rising freshmen and six sophomores have enrolled and plan to start classes at Christ the King this fall.

Christ the King, part of the Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools system, joins Charlotte Catholic as Catholic high schools located in the Mecklenburg region. The school will serve students from Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, Cabarrus, Lincoln and Rowan counties.

Dolan said the school plans to offer advanced educational opportunities. In addition to standard high school classes, an extensive honors program will be available for students seeking to enhance the status of their high school achievements. There will also be a comprehensive advisory program as well as a digital media program that will allow classes to operate entirely digitally with students working on MacBook computers. The technological advances will also make it possible for students and faculty members to stay in touch during periods of inclement weather or any type of situation that prevents regular interaction at the school.

Six full-time faculty members have been hired and interviews for sports coaching positions a restill under way.
