Lime Energy, headquartered in Huntersville and one of the nation's leading providers of clean energy solutions, announced earlier this week the beginning of a sponsorship agreement with Uncharted Play, the creators of sOccket, a portable source of clean, renewable energy designed to help families in need.
The sOccket is a durable soccer ball that harnesses the kinetic energy of the ball during normal game play and stores it for later power needs. After just 30 minutes of play, small electrical appliances, like an LED lamp, can be plugged into the sOccket for three hours of electricity.
"Lime's purpose is to build a clean energy future and this sponsorship aligns to our values as a company," says John O'Rourke, Lime President and CEO, in a recent press release.
"The creators of sOccket have developed a renewable resource that taps into the global passion for the game of soccer and creates a lasting solution to the growing energy crisis."
"Imagine everything you do after the sun goes down? Without electricity many of those things would be impossible. In partnership with Lime Energy, we are able to give the gift of reliable, sustainable electricity to communities that live everyday without lights," says Uncharted Play's cofounder, Jessica Mathews.
The company is described as a nonprofit "social enterprise venturing into 'uncharted' territory in its focused development of fun products that address real-world problems."
"The sOccket can save resource-poor families 10 percent or more on their annual expenses, while at the same time providing a durable soccer ball that has over a three-year life span," Mathews said.
As part of the sponsorship with Uncharted Play, Lime Energy is launching a section on its Web site (www.cleanpowercommunity.com) that will serve as a social platform to engage with customers throughout 2012.
"Our customers will be able to visit our Web site and choose where in the world they would like to send sOcckets," says Adam Procell, executive vice president of Lime Energy.
"This is a way to honor the commitment that our energy efficiency and renewable energy customers have made to clean energy while providing a tangible investment in resource-poor communities around the world."
