Award-winning young adult author, Garret Freymann-Weyr, will read her first children's picture book, French Ducks in Venice, on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m. at the Davidson Branch Library in a program geared towards families with school-aged children.

Freymann-Weyr, a Davidson resident, decided to try her hand at writing a children's picture book and partnered with newcomer Erin McGuire, children's book illustrator from Dallas, Texas, who specializes in digital art, to produce "cinematically lit pictures (that) recall classic Disney images of winsome animals consoling star-crossed heroines," according to Publishers Weekly.

This picture book tells the tale of two ducks, Georges and Cécile in Venice Beach, Calif., and their friend, Polina, a maker of beautiful dresses, who is suffering from the loss of her boyfriend. These ducks, living in the canal behind Polina's house, go to the ends of the earth to brighten her spirits, leaving the reader with a sense of hope.

Freymann-Weyr has written Stay With Me, My Heartbeat, named a Printz Honor Book in 2003, When I Was Older, The Kings Are Already Here, Pretty Girls, and most recently out in paperback, After the Moment, all for the young adult audience.

The program is geared toward an audience of 5- to 11-year-olds, but the family is welcome to attend. After reading the book, Freymann-Weyr will lead a discussion of the themes, discuss the writing and publishing process, and answer any questions from the audience. "And we can all eat duck-shaped cookies," says Freymann-Weyr.
