Monumental task complete

Written by  Andrew Warfield/CitizenWarfield on Twitter

Cornelius finishes what former mayor started. Veterans Monument to be dedicated Friday.

Harold Little stood before the Cornelius Town Board of Commissioners, as he had many times on matters of community interest since his own days at the dais as mayor. Only this time, it was more personal.

The town's tiny veterans memorial, along with its former police station, had been removed to make way for progress at the corner of Catawba Avenue and N.C. 115, next door to the Cornelius Town Hall. He urged the town to get involved in the replacement of the monument, and he wanted it done quickly enough so he could see it.

Little, a Navy veteran, didn't live long enough to witness this Friday's dedication of the new Cornelius Veterans Monument at Rotary Plaza. He died this past summer. But the memory of his service to his country, and thus, his community — along with that of more than 1,100 others so far — is forever engraved on the granite walls that line the nearly $200,000 monument honoring all veterans, alive or dead, who at some point in their lives called Cornelius home.

"Two years ago, Harold Little began coming to our meetings and saying we need to do something to replace the memorial that's not there anymore, and that's where it all started," says Cornelius Assistant Town Manager Andrew Grant. "The board then formed a committee made up of town folks and design folks, and the rest is history."

In more ways than one. Walking along the interior walls and viewing the inscribed names is a tour through a who's who of Cornelius history. Multiple names of families synonymous with Cornelius and north Mecklenburg are there, among all those submitted from five branches of the military. Five branches because, during World War II, those who served in the Merchant Marines were considered veterans of the war. The branches are represented by the five white columns that line the outside of the brick-floored plaza adjacent to the Town Hall parking lot. Embedded in each column is a black granite panel engraved with the seal of each military branch.

Opposite the columns are the granite panels, including a panel that holds the names of members of American Legion Post 86, which partnered with the town on the project and served as host location of Veterans Day and Memorial Day activities until now. In the future, Grant says, ceremonies are envisioned at the monument, with chairs set up in the Plaza.

A round, elevated stage is the dominant feature of the north end of the monument, punctuated by a flagpole in the center. Audiences viewing speakers at events will no doubt notice the granite plaque embedded in the rock wall at the base of the stage, engraved with the image of and details about Jerry Crump, Cornelius' only known Medal of Honor recipient.

The design of the monument was selected by a jury from among 19 entries from across the state, the winning entry ironically submitted by the Cornelius-based husband-and-wife design team of Gary and Elise Sankhauser. The Town of Cornelius pledged $50,000 toward the cost of the monument, which is on town-owned property, with the rest of the original budget of $165,000 to be raised by the community.

The actual cost is $190,000, but not because of cost overruns. "The reason for the increase in the budget is we originally thought we would have about 600 names submitted, and we doubled that," says Grant. "The increased cost is in materials to accommodate that."

And there is room for more. There is more space on the monument's interior walls for names submitted, and for the names of those who serve, after Friday's dedication. "The intention is for this to be a living monument, and it will be ongoing for those who serve in the future," says Grant.

Although it is nearly fully paid for, fundraising for the monument continues. To make a contribution, visit www.corneliusveteransmonument.org or stop by Cornelius Town Hall.

The dedication ceremony for the Cornelius Veterans Monument at Rotary Plaza will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. The Town of Cornelius and American Legion Post 86 will conduct a ceremony honoring veterans and those currently serving in the Armed Forces. Post 86 Commander John Washam will lead the ceremony, which will include a welcome from Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte, keynote address by North Carolina Speaker of the House Thom Tillis, a 21-gun salute by American Legion Post 86 and patriotic music performed by the Cornelius Interfaith and Hough High School choirs, accompanied by the Hough High School Concert Band. Parking is limited, so participants are encouraged to take advantage of satellite parking at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Shuttle service is available. The monument is adjacent to Cornelius Town Hall at 21455 Catawba Ave.
