Richards Coffee Shop and Veterans’ Museum celebrates anniversary

Written by  Staff

MOORESVILLE, N.C — Welcome Home Veterans Living Military Museum at Richard’s Coffee Shop in downtown Mooresville (165 N. Main St.) will celebrate its fifth anniversary Wednesday, May 17. The public is invited to the complimentary luncheon and recognition ceremony from noon to 2 p.m.

Commonly known simply as Richard’s Coffee Shop, the facility serves as a refuge and welcoming center for veterans of all branches of the military and campaigns from World War II to present-day conflicts.

Officially chartered in 2009, Welcome Home Veterans Living Military Museum at Richard’s Coffee Shop began following the death of Richard Warren, an Army veteran of Vietnam who made welcoming home all veterans and thanking them for their service his mission in life. That original location was at 126 S. Main St. in Mooresville.

Growth quickly necessitated a larger facility, and soon its board of directors took the leap of faith in purchasing the current location, which is more than five times the size of the original space. Richard offered a free cup of coffee to all first-time veterans visiting his shop and free coffee to all veterans every Thursday. That tradition remains alive and well, and it is not uncommon to find more than 100 veterans in and around Richard’s on any given Thursday.

Everyone is welcome to attend the five-year anniversary celebration. Welcome Home Veterans Living Military Museum at Richard’s Coffee Shop is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of veterans dedicated to helping veterans.
