FIRE means tasty BBQ, support for Ada Jenkins

More than 165 runners kicked off the Ada Jenkins Center Third Annual FIRE 2011 event, a day that was punctuated with a barbecue festival that is one of the center’s two annual primary fundraising events. A companion event to the wintertime’s ICE fundraiser, FIRE features the early-morning 5K race followed by a barbecue sampling and competition for professionals and amateurs alike.

Softball playoffs begin Tuesday

The softball teams from Hopewell and North Meck are bound for the 4A state playoffs, which begin this Tuesday. The Vikings and Titans were to meet in the I-Meck Conference tournament semifinals this past Wednesday for a spot in the finals the next day. North (19-3 overall, 12-2 I-Meck) entered the event as the No. 2 seed and will enter the playoffs with the same seed as long as either the Vikings or top-seeded Lake Norman win the I-Meck tournament. Hopewell (17-4, 10-4) was the No. 3 seed.
