'Trifecta' band battle a foursome in year two

The tuneup is underway for north Mecklenburg's second Trifecta "battle of the bands."

The competition and showcase for local musicians will be held Friday, May 11, at Historic Rural Hill in Huntersville and is open to student bands from Hopewell, Hough, North Meck and Lake Norman Charter high schools.

A student-staffed organizing committee, again with assistance and guidance from Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain, is in the process of securing sponsors and reviewing entries for the Trifecta, which earned its name last year when only three schools — Hopewell, Hough and North Meck — were represented. It is keeping the monicker to maintain the momentum generated by last year's inaugural event.

The organizing committee includes students from each of the four high schools. In addition to spreading the word among fellow students about the Trifecta, committee members are also reaching out to area businesses, organizations and even municipalities seeking financial assistance to finance the use of sound equipment and the services of professional sound technicians for the competition.

Band applications and preliminary details about the event are available on the event's Facebook site, which can be accessed through a "Trifecta Battle of the Bands" search. Applications will be accepted through April 11. Those interested in helping sponsor the event can contact Lee Sullivan at the Lake Norman Citizen, 704-948-3348.

The event will start at 4 p.m. on May 11, the day before the North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival, takes center stage.
