Sign before, talk back after 'Children of a Lesser God'

Written by  Staff

Davidson Community Players, with the help of a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, will offer a free American Sign Language workshop Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Armour Street Theater in Davidson. This basic introduction to ASL will cover simple phrases, finger spelling, numbers and colors as well as valuable information about the deaf culture.

The workshop will be led by Lyndi Patton-Gura, a professional sign language interpreter, teacher and actress. She is one of the featured shadow interpreters for the Players' production of Children of a Lesser God, which opens Feb. 23 and runs through March 11. Shadow interpreting puts the signing immediately beside the actor and will be used at all 12 performances, making each show accessible to all people who sign.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the United States use American Sign Language as their primary language. Many are deaf, while others are family members, friends and co-workers who have learned to sign in order to communicate with the deaf person. Many high schools and colleges now offer ASL as a foreign language and classes fill up quickly. Reservations to DCP's ASL class may be made by calling the box office at 704-892-7953.

Curtain time for Davidson Community Players' production of Children of a Lesser God will be 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets cost $12 to $20 and may be reserved by calling 704-892-7953 or online at www.DavidsonCommunityPlayers.org. An audience "talkback" will be held after each performance opening weekend.

I had been a lonely woman for several years until I found a good dating site for deafs. At last I found my boyfriend there and I am going to marry him. So I recommend this site for you, DeafMatching, com . I hope this is useful to you.
