A highlight of the activities was an open house at the Chamber where the regional business association recognized the 2011 Small Business of the Year.
Shawn Brodof, founder of Clarity Coaching and author of The Termite Effect — 25 Common Business Mistakes and Their Hidden Consequences, was recognized by the Chamber as the 2011 Small Business of the Year. Brodof, an adjunct professor at Catawba College Ketner School of Business, is an entrepreneur and licensed professional business coach who successfully started four businesses while accumulating more than 14 years experience working for Fortune 500 financial institutions.
The award was presented by Robert Reed, 2011 chairman of the Chamber and was sponsored by Park Avenue Properties.
Reed pointed out that many businesses were nominated and the selection process was difficult for the committee tasked with choosing this year’s award. Two other local businesses were recognized as well for their success. Angela Swett of Image Promotions Inc., and David Boraks with Davidsonnews.net and Corneliusnews.net were cited for honorable mention.
Reed noted that all three businesses demonstrated growth in the market, innovative management practices and involvement in the community. “Our small businesses play a vital role in the economic health and vitality of the Lake Norman region,” said Reid. “Small business, while constituting 80 to 85 percent of our economy, employs 50 percent of our workforce. These particular businesses are models of success and all three are also engaged as great community ambassadors as they work to make the lake communities a great place to live and work.”
