Survey statistics released this week by CMS indicate that in the area north of I-485 up to 100 people out of every 10,000 residents took part in the survey. The only section of the county with a higher rate of participation was a dense pocket of population in the southern portion of the county near Matthews.
Complete survey results, and an analysis of the survey summarized by the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, will be presented to the Mecklenburg County Board of Education at its Dec. 13 meeting, but preliminary reports indicate finances are at the top of respondents' lists of concerns.
Teachers, high school students and residents of the county were asked to list the five most important issues facing CMS as it prepares to hire a new superintendent and budget cuts and finances were identified as the major concern by each group.
In addition to the monetary issues, residents listed public trust in school system leadership, the number of students per class, preparing students for higher education or the work place and meeting the needs of individual learners as the other top priorities for CMS.
The number of students per class and preparing students for the future were also priories for the teachers and high school students responding. Teachers included the public trust issue in their top five along with teacher evaluation programs.
Students identified dropout and graduation rates as a priority along with the need to keep up with technological advancements in education.
In the portion of the survey that asked respondents what qualities they considered most important for CMS' new superintendent, trustworthiness was the number one issue. Other qualities listed as high priorities on every group's list included reliability, fairness and intelligence and while parents and teachers stressed accountability, students identified determination as the character trait they would like the new superintendent to illustrate.
The ability to secure adequate school funding and resources was unanimously selected as the talent the new superintendent must possess, and problem-solving and gaining trust were the personal skills respondents are looking for in the school system's next leader.
And while students and county residents believe financial management experience is the most vital trait for the new superintendent, teachers believe a background with direct involvement in a K-12 educational setting is the most important factor.
Approximately three-fourths of those taking part in the survey have children attending CMS schools and 22 percent of the respondents teach in the CMS system. More women than men — the ratio was about 4-to-1 — took part in the survey and 60 percent of those participating have lived in the county for more than 11 years.
Information compiled from the survey, as well as comments and input received at community meetings being held this week throughout the county, will be considered as CMS continues the search for its next superintendent.
Dance program Friday at CSD
An interpretive dance program involving approximately half the middle school students at Community School of Davidson — and linked to an ongoing literature lesson for the students — will be presented this week at the school.
The middle school dance elective students at CSD will present two shows Friday, Dec. 9, at the middle school gym on Armour Street. Performances are open to the public and will be held at 9:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
The dance presentation is inspired by The Hunger Games, a best-selling novel set in unpleasant surroundings by Suzanne Collins. The students, including a collection of sixth, seventh and eighth graders enrolled in 10 dance elective classes at the school, recently completed a unit on dance and literature and were encouraged to explore character and emotion while bringing words to life through movement.
The book is a favorite among CSD students, as well as faculty members and parents. In fact, parts of a movie based on the book were filmed locally and some CSD students and staff members worked as extras.
"My inspiration for choreography was, first and foremost, the book itself," says Sara Keys, CSD dance instructor. "... I went back and re-read over and over to take note of the smallest details that could be used to create movement and any aspect of the production such as costumes or lighting.
"My students helped me by adding in their own interpretation of the book with short movement phrases and giving suggestions to change or add on to the choreography as we explored the process together in class," she says. "The music lent itself beautifully to improvisation for the emotion we were trying to convey, which later evolved into some of the movement used in the show."
Musical selections for the program include a range of tracks from popular artists and songs from unofficial scores that have been created by artists also inspired by the books.
Keys also searched fan blogs related to the book to find additional music ideas and students also provided suggestions that found their way into the show. The soundtrack for the movie, tentatively scheduled for release in March of next year, has not been publicized, so students were urged to be creative in compiling their selections.
Barnette in mix For Pepsi Grant
Barnette Elementary School in Huntersville is in the running for a major financial contribution and is looking for community support to enhance its chances.
The school, on Beatties Ford Road, has been selected to compete for a $25,000 grant through Pepsi's Refresh Everything project.
If Barnette is among the winners, school officials plan to use the money to purchase a classroom set of iPads, applications and additional equipment to improve the technological educational opportunities available for students.
Over the last two years, the Pepsi Corp. has distributed more than $1.2 million per month to help improve organizations, communities and schools. Winners of the grants are chosen solely on the basis of votes received with the top 15 vote-getters qualifying in the $25,000 category.

Participants at least 14 years old with an e-mail address or cell phone will be eligible to vote once by each method everyday throughout December.
LNC's McDaniel wins state honor
A local teacher was recently honored for outstanding achievement and skills as a presenter of educational material.
Jean McDaniel, a French teacher at Lake Norman Charter in Huntersville, was selected as a Top 10 Presenter at the 2011 Foreign Language Association of North Carolina conference held in Winston-Salem.
McDaniel's recognition was based on the evaluations submitted from attendees at her session at the FLANC event. McDaniel took part in the conference by sharing practical classroom knowledge and teacher experience with other foreign language educators from across the state.
Essay contest deadline nears
The deadline for entries in a national essay contest for high school students — with a potential $1,000 prize — is one week away.
Students and their teachers have until midnight on Thursday, Dec. 15, to submit entries in the Bill of Rights Institute's "Being an American" essay competition. The essay topic tasks students to explore principles outlined in the Constitution of the United States by answering the question "How does the Constitution establish and maintain a culture of liberty?"
Area students will compete in the Southern Region that includes 11 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Students in grades 9-12 are eligible and essays should be no longer than 1,000 words in length. In each region, prizes include first prize of $1,000, second prize at $500, third prize of $250 and teacher prizes of $100. LNC students coordinate effort to help babies
Sixth graders at Lake Norman Charter School celebrated the spirit of giving throughout November. Students organized a month-long drive to benefit the Women's Homeless Shelter in Charlotte with an emphasis on items for babies. The final collection included diapers, baby formula, baby wipes, food items, clothing and other items including $150 in monetary donations.
