Politics as unusual

Written by

At Monday’s Huntersville Town Board session, Talkers were anticipating the first salvos in a months-long battle leading up to November elections. Despite expectations and the appropriate pending holiday, there were very few fireworks.

With the departure of Ken Lucas as “Sundance” to Charles Jeter’s “Butch,” the premature announcement by Danae Caulfield that she wants Mayor Jill Swain’s seat just a few feet down the dais, and the fact that other citizens are wading into the candidate pool, Talkers were thinking there would be plenty of posturing for position and publicity. But except for a few subtle swipes, the dignitaries were civil.

Is this a sign of new cooperation, consideration and congeniality among commissioners, or more likely the calm before the inevitable squabbles that will build up and rattle the walls like summer thunderstorms from now until fall? With the platforms, priorities, personalities and past performances involved, Talkers are keeping an umbrella handy.
