The town announced this week that it had hired Leslie Willis as its living/wellness supervisor. Willis comes to Davidson from Joplin, Mo., where she was director of recreational services at Missouri Southern State University. She will earn a salary of $41,000 a year to manage “all aspects of recreation programming to promote a healthy lifestyle for all community residents,” according to the town’s job description.
“Wellness” has become something of a buzzword nationally, as organizations, companies and governments focus on preventing the need for expensive health care and other services later by keeping people healthy today.
Nationally, First Lady Michelle Obama has made community health one of her signature causes through the “Let’s Move” campaign to reverse childhood obesity. Talkers aren’t sure of the significance, but Charlotte, Huntersville and Cornelius have endorsed Let’s Move, while Davidson has not.
But, of course, Davidson doesn’t think well of following other communities’ lead.
