(From left) Scot Slusarick, Brenda Frazier, Josh Shope and Summer Heath work the kitchen during the Huntersville Lions Club’s Pancake Breakfast fundraiser last Saturday at Huntersville United Methodist Church. Proceeds will support patients and families in the Huntersville Ocular Melanoma (OM) Cancer Cluster group. Local OM patients, like 23-year-old Heath, require regular follow-up exams that are expensive and, in many cases, involve travel to meet with ophthalmology and oncology specialists familiar with the rare cancer. Heath is one of at least 12 individuals with residential or occupational ties to Huntersville diagnosed with OM in the last few years, a cancer that statistically impacts five to six people out of a million each year in the United States.
