Matt Siegel

Written by

The next seven weeks are what Matt Siegel’s professional career comes down to every year. He oversees the annual Carolinas Renaissance Festival, which begins this weekend on the festival grounds off Poplar Tent Road at N.C. 73 in western Huntersville. He works on the event the entire year, with the past two months being a whirlwind of implementing plans and working very long hours. Now that all the merry maids and thundering knights are all in place, and the mythical village of Fairhaven is set to open its gates, he took a few minutes to answer our questions as this week’s Fellow Citizen.

What is your current state of mind?

Excited! The Carolina Renaissance Festival opens for its 18th annual season on Oct. 8.

What qualities do you value in a friend?

Honesty, integrity, candor, good humor, and an appreciation of good, dark beer.

What do you regret about your youth?

Letting my mom give me a haircut. It was terrible.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I am blessed to be able to work with many incredibly talented individuals with skills that span
all of the arts. I admire them all and find it impossible to choose just one talent I would most like to have.

What is your favorite place?

A lazy day at home with my beautiful wife and daughters.

What would you do if you hit the lottery?

I would spoil my loved ones, sack the rest away, live modestly off the interest and travel
frequently.

On what occasion do you lie?

Like a lot of parents, my wife and I tend to soften life’s harsh realities when explaining them to our children.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Much of my childhood was spent in extreme poverty and I worked diligently to escape it by
gaining significant work experience while simultaneously earning a college education.

What is your best quality?

I suppose you would have to ask those that know me best. I imagine they would say my boyish charm, sense of humor, incredibly good looks, wealth, fame, and … creative imagination.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would like to take more time with my wife to explore our shared interests and hobbies.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Cheese-It crackers. I have a box with me almost everywhere.

What would you rather be doing right now?

Giving away more free stuff on the Carolina Renaissance Festival’s Facebook page.
