Sarah Mooney

Written by

Sarah Mooney is her name, but to friends, teammates and opponents alike, she will always be Boomer. One of the top fastpitch softball players this area — and the state — has ever produced, Mooney is also one of the most beloved. A star catcher, Mooney proved during her prep career that she could hit for average while also hitting for power, an uncommon combination she put on display this past spring while setting single-season state records for batting average (.779) and home runs (19), the latter of which propelled her to 37 career home runs, another state mark. She was previously named an All-American and all-everything else, but this week, Mooney, for the second straight year, earned the distinction as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year in the high school division. Mooney begins her freshman year at James Madison University in two weeks, but this week, she’s our Fellow Citizen.

What would you rather be doing right now?

Be on a beach somewhere with my feet in the sand and the sun shining bright.
