Uncle Sam

Written by

As we celebrate the Fourth of July on Monday, we honor the 235th birthday of the United States of America. And although he hasn’t been here through it all, Uncle Sam has served as a symbol for our democratic republic since 1820, a patriotic personification of the nation. He’s been a pretty busy guy since then, and really has his hands full this year, but he still took a moment to answer our questions as this week’s Fellow Citizen.

What is your current state of mind?

Patriotic

What makes you happy?

Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and a fine, American-made automobile.

What qualities do you value in a friend?

Honesty, loyalty and the willingness to enter into an arms treaty.

If you had a motto, what would it be?

I already have one. “Uncle Sam wants you!”

What do you regret about your youth?

I’m only 191 years old. That’s still youthful in terms of a national symbol.

Where is your favorite place?

From sea to shining sea. I kind of liked it when we added Hawaii, though.

Who is your hero?

Everyone who signed the Declaration of Independence. I’d have to single out John Hancock, though. That dude had flair.

What would you do if you hit the lottery?

Make an interest payment on the national debt.

On what occasion do you lie?

I cannot tell a lie. Borrowed that line from one of my all-time favorites.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Are you kidding?

What is your greatest treasure?

The nation, for which I stand.

What is your best quality?

The nation, for which I stand.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

The false perceptions for which some people think I stand.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Earl Grey.

What would you rather be doing right now?

Sitting in a lawn chair on a warm summer night, watching fireworks and sipping a cold American beer.
