Richard Colven

Written by

Richard Colven moved to the Lake Norman area in late 2011 with his wife, Mary, and their family to run Camp Wagging Tails when long-time owners Jim and Celia Bensman sold them their popular pet boarding and day camp facility in Cornelius. Colven grew up in Kinston, N.C., and says he hopes his children will love growing up Tar Heels, too. On a confessional note, he says one of the conditions of purchase when negotiating with the Bensmans was that the weather had to stay in the 60s all through winter. He hopes y'all won't mind that. Colven 'pawsed' long enough from his doggy day camp duties to play along this week as our Fellow Citizen.

What is your current state of mind?

Woof!

What qualities do you value in a friend?

To borrow a phrase from Billy Currington, "I want you to love me like my dog does."

What do you regret about your youth?

That it went by too quickly.

What is your favorite place?

Honestly, I have been to a lot of places, but they all taught me how great right here is.

What would you do if you hit the lottery?

After securing courtside seats at the Dean Dome for life, probably give the rest away.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Convincing my best friend to marry me. Seriously, the case study is still used at used car sales academies everywhere.

On what occasion do you lie?

When answering questions about winning the lottery.

What is your best quality?

My sense of humor, especially my ability to laugh at myself.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would like to practice more patience.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Cheesecake, but the guilt only really starts when contemplating the third piece.

What would you rather be doing right now?

Getting my daughter Alex Colven's name in the paper. She knows I can't resist her charm. (You had better include Mickie, too, or I am in big trouble! Drew will cut me some slack.)
