Gina Nichols

Written by

Gina Nichols lives in Cornelius with her husband, Michael, and they are the proud parents of Michael Harrison Nichols (3/18/99 – 2/17/08). Although she hails from New Jersey, she says she considers the Lake Norman area her home and loves the beauty and warmth of the South. Nichols is the Director of Services for the Harrison Nichols Foundation (see story, Page 33), serving as the direct liaison between the foundation and the families it assists. Being active is a huge part of her life and she spends most free time either in the gym, running or on a tennis court. The self-confessed "Type A" forced herself to sit still long enough recently to answer some intrusive questions as this week's Fellow Citizen.

What is your current state of mind?

I am in a constant state of "preoccupancy." I am usually moving at mach 60 through life, so for me that means always thinking about or doing something.

What qualities do you value in a friend?

Once someone told me I was their "non-fluffy" friend. I took it as a compliment. She said that I always shot straight, that she could always count on me to be honest with only the slightest hint of fluff (when necessary). Honesty and loyalty seem so cliché but when you mix it with a little bit of grit you get "non-fluffy," and that is what I am and that is what I value in a friend. It is a pretty good recipe for friendship.

What is your favorite place?

Truthfully, my home. The more exotic answer: almost anywhere with a coastline and water.

What would you do if you hit the lottery?

You mean after the smelling salts? I guess what everyone else would do — share it with my family, help out my friends who need it, make a ridiculously large contribution to my favorite charity, spend some stupidly, and travel (a lot).

On what occasion do you lie?

I despise lying. The only acceptable occasion is if someone's feelings would be hurt. For example, saying "this pasta and sauce is delicious," when every hair on my Italian head is standing straight on end!

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

That's easy — giving life to the greatest person I have ever had the privilege to know, Harrison (my son and my hero).

What is your best quality?

My best may also be seen as my worst. I am pretty high strung and very type "A." I think it's my best feature. I am known to those who love me as the "get 'er done girl."

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Watching The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. I can't believe I admitted that in public.

What would you rather be doing right now?

Nothing really, it is 7 a.m. on a Tuesday. I am having coffee, and enjoying my own surprise at my answers. The Bachelor and Bachelorette, really????
