Solar farms lighting western N.C. homes

Written by

The clean energy industry has received a recent power boost of sorts, as Cornelius-based O2 Energies announced the opening of two key projects.

Late last week, the company’s one-megawatt solar project in Newland linked up to the clean energy grid, where it’s expected to produce enough electricity to power 120 homes. The $5 million project was built on six acres of a 38-acre Christmas tree farm in the mountains of Avery County, and the solar power produced there will be sold to Mountain Electric Co-op.

In addition, the Mount Airy News reports this week that Surry County will join the clean energy movement with the opening of O2 Energies’ 1.2-megawatt Mayberry Solar Farm, located on city property surrounding Mount Airy’s wastewater treatment plant. The operation is the first of its kind in Surry County.

The newspaper reports the solar farm is expected to generate enough power for about 150 homes. The solar panel arrays will connect to the Duke Energy grid, with both Duke and ElectriCities of North Carolina buying the generated power and the renewable energy credits.

O2 Energies develops turn-key, ground-mounted solar power plants on the East Coast, and provides consulting services for clients wanting to grow their business in the renewable energy market. More information is available at www.o2energies.com.
